Luna Ultra reaches 15× zoom, but 4K vertical tops out at 6×

Insta360 has issued a firmware update for its Luna Ultra gimbal camera that raises its in-camera zoom ceiling from 12× to 15×, adds a concert-oriented Stage Mode, and enables 4K30 vertical video. The update is available through the Insta360 app, while a new Zoom Bundle with an Ultra Telephoto Lens is priced at $889.99.

The 15× figure is equivalent to 300mm, according to Insta360. The company positions the update for distant subjects—performers on a stage, people, signage, buildings, and landscapes—rather than every shooting mode. The highest zoom is available in Video, PureVideo, Stage Mode, and Photo; Insta360 recommends 4K30 for telephoto shooting.

This is not a new optical zoom range built into the camera. Insta360 says its dual professional imaging chips use AI Remosaic to reconstruct detail lost in digital cropping. That may help a high-zoom image look better than conventional digital enlargement, but it remains computational processing of a cropped image. The announcement provides no sample comparisons, measurement methodology, or independent image-quality results at 15×.

Two ways to reach 450mm

The new Ultra Telephoto Lens is the hardware counterpart to the firmware update. Insta360 says the magnetic snap-on accessory extends Luna Ultra’s optical range by 1.5×. Coupled with the 15× in-camera zoom, the company quotes a maximum 450mm-equivalent focal length.

The lens does not simply supplement the main camera. Insta360 says the main camera is covered while the telephoto lens is attached. Buyers expecting to switch cameras freely during a take should note that the release describes a dedicated telephoto setup, attached magnetically, rather than a dual-camera system that can expose both views at once.

Insta360 calls the accessory lightweight and portable, but does not disclose its weight, aperture, sensor path, price as a standalone item, or whether its optical characteristics change between the quoted 90mm and 450mm endpoints. The only stated retail option is the Luna Ultra Zoom Bundle, which includes the Standard Bundle, Carry Bag, and Ultra Telephoto Lens for $889.99.

Stage Mode changes tracking, metering, and audio

Stage Mode is the update’s more specific feature. Rather than treating a concert as ordinary low-light video, it applies scene-specific processing and control changes for performers framed through crowds, moving lights, and props such as glow sticks.

On focus, Insta360 says the mode uses face-specific filtering and adjusted focusing sensitivity to avoid being pulled away from a performer by foreground interference. Its tracking model was trained on concert footage and is intended to recognize, follow, and reacquire performers under low light at high zoom. The company has not supplied tracking accuracy, reacquisition time, or a comparison with Luna Ultra’s standard tracking mode.

Exposure is also altered for the scenario. Stage Mode strengthens highlight suppression, uses face-weighted metering, and changes dynamic-range handling to preserve detail under strong stage lights. Dedicated white-balance and color strategies are meant to maintain saturation and recover the appearance of colored stage lighting. Stage video often has extremely bright highlights surrounded by dark backgrounds, a situation in which broad scene metering can sacrifice a face to preserve the light rig or vice versa.

The mode adds two audio profiles. Stage Audio prioritizes sound arriving from the stage direction, while Ambient Audio is intended to retain both the performance and the venue atmosphere. Insta360 does not detail the microphone configuration, directional-processing method, or whether either profile can separate speech or music from crowd noise. Buyers should read the modes as capture priorities, not as a promise of isolated concert-board audio.

Stage Mode also allows Live Frame stills to be captured while video recording continues. That removes the need to stop a clip or switch to photo mode to save a moment. The mode can be used with the Ultra Telephoto Lens, pairing the company’s scene-specific tracking and exposure algorithms with the longer 90mm–450mm range.

Vertical 4K has a much lower zoom ceiling

Luna Ultra can now record vertical video at 4K30 when its rotating screen is turned vertically. Insta360 says the feature uses its 4nm Qualcomm flagship AI chip and 6K oversampling. It is available only in Video mode, not PureVideo, Stage Mode, or Photo.

The vertical implementation has tighter zoom guidance than the new 15× feature. It supports up to 6× zoom, but Insta360 recommends staying at 3× or below for the best experience. The company says quality from the telephoto lens between 3× and 6× is still being optimized and will be finalized in the official release.

Creators can choose 4K vertical framing directly in-camera, but the company is not presenting the 3×–6× telephoto portion as finished image processing. Someone buying Luna Ultra chiefly for close vertical shots should distinguish the available 6× setting from the recommended 3× operating range.

The update also adds Zoom Live, a Live Frame shooting style that creates a smooth zoom-in effect for portrait and lifestyle shots. Separately, Live Frame photos can now use Beauty Mode effects and cinematic filters simultaneously. These are creative controls rather than new capture formats, and continue the company’s emphasis on producing edited-looking output in camera.

What this clarifies—and what it does not

Our September 11 coverage of the Insta360 Luna Pro described a $599.99 gimbal camera with an 8K 1-inch sensor, Leica lens, detachable OLED remote, and native 4K vertical video. This announcement is explicitly for Luna Ultra, while its wording also introduces 4K30 vertical video as a new Luna Ultra capability. The supplied material does not explain the relationship between Luna Pro and Luna Ultra, whether their existing vertical-video implementations differ, or whether any Luna Pro features will arrive on Luna Ultra.

The announcement establishes neither a replacement relationship nor shared firmware support. It also does not state the standalone price or availability date for the Ultra Telephoto Lens, the price of the Standard Bundle, a firmware version number, or the geographic availability of the $889.99 Zoom Bundle.

For existing Luna Ultra owners, the update is delivered through the Insta360 app: connect the camera and follow the app’s on-screen update instructions. Stage Mode applies processing to high magnification, low light, moving subjects, and distracting foreground objects. Its value will depend on results the announcement does not provide: how well focus holds at 15×, what detail AI Remosaic retains in difficult light, and whether the still-in-progress 3×–6× vertical telephoto processing meets the camera’s 4K claim.
