iOS 27 is now available for iPhone 11 and later, but Siri AI is not available to every supported phone. The new context-aware assistant launches as an English-language beta on Apple Intelligence-capable hardware and has daily server-side usage limits that Apple says it may eventually expand for a fee.
The September 14, 2026 release covers iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27 Golden Gate, watchOS 27, visionOS 27, and tvOS 27. Siri AI is absent from tvOS but available on iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and Vision Pro. The company’s release documentation confirms a more limited rollout: Siri AI begins in English, with French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish scheduled for October 2026.
An iPhone 11 or newer can install iOS 27, including the second-generation iPhone SE, but Apple Intelligence and Siri AI require an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 model or later, iPhone Air, or iPhone Duo. The same division applies to iPads: software support is broader than access to the computational features Apple is advertising.
Siri AI has access, but not unlimited capacity
Siri AI replaces the older assistant interaction with a dedicated app and a conversational interface available through voice, typed prompts, the side button, and a gesture from the middle of the screen. Apple says the assistant can retrieve personal context from Messages, Mail, Photos, and other data; answer questions about current onscreen material; search the web; and carry out more actions in supported apps.
Siri AI differs from a standalone chatbot. A request can search for a specific email, message, image, file, link, or stored password using details such as a person, time, or location. It can delete messages, files, emails, or photos; add a web recipe’s ingredients to a shopping list; create a Home automation; fill out Contacts details; and act on content shown onscreen. Siri mode also moves Visual Intelligence into the Camera app, where Apple demonstrates receipt parsing for bill splitting and custom Wallet-pass creation.

Apple’s hardware requirements limit the feature to part of its installed base. The Apple Foundation Models described in the reporting include AFM 3 Core, a 3-billion-parameter on-device model, and AFM 3 Core Advanced, a 20-billion-parameter sparse model that activates between 1 billion and 4 billion parameters per request. Apple also uses server-hosted AFM 3 Cloud, AFM 3 Cloud Pro, and ADM 3 Cloud for image work.
Apple says Siri AI, intelligent photo editing, Image Playground, and AFM 3 Cloud features in Shortcuts are among the server-backed capabilities subject to daily usage limits. Those limits can vary with feature, request complexity, system demand, and Apple’s policies. The company says expanded access will be available for a fee in the future, but has not disclosed the pricing, limits, or the date on which paid access will begin.
The generative features are a metered beta service for compatible devices. Apple has not specified the operating limits.
| Capability | Available now | Stated next availability |
|---|---|---|
| Siri AI language rollout | English beta | French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish in October 2026 |
| Expanded server-side AI access | Daily limits vary by feature and demand | Available for a fee in the future; price and date not announced |
Siri AI is also unavailable to users under 13. Apple says it will not initially be available on iOS, iPadOS, or watchOS in the European Union, even though Mac and Vision Pro users in the EU can use it when their devices are set to a supported language. It will not be available in China while Apple works through regulatory requirements. “Apple Intelligence supported language” and “Siri AI available in a given country” are not the same condition.
Faster claims have specific test conditions
Apple says iOS 27 has faster animations, app launches, photo loading, AirDrop transfers, network switching, keyboard response, and Home Screen navigation. Its published claims come from defined Apple tests rather than an independent benchmark suite.
Apps launch up to 30 percent faster, based on Apple’s August 2026 comparison between an iPhone 11 Pro Max running iOS 26.6 and prerelease iOS 27 after many device-use cycles. Photos load up to 70 percent faster after capture, tested in July 2026 on an iPhone 15 with a 50,000-asset photo library. AirDrop transfers are claimed to be up to 80 percent faster in a test that moved multiple photos totaling 30MB between nearby contacts not connected to Wi-Fi, using an iPhone 16 Plus.
The tests do not establish a universal speedup for every iPhone, app, image library, or file transfer. Apple explicitly says performance varies with configuration, settings, content, use, software version, and environmental conditions. There are no independent iOS 27 performance results in the supplied reporting.
iPadOS 27 carries a separate claim: browsing and moving files to an external USB drive can be up to 5x faster. Apple’s test used an 11-inch iPad Pro with M4, an APFS-formatted USB4 SSD, and 10,000 JPG files. The claim applies to that configuration, not all iPad file operations.
The practical changes beyond the assistant
iOS 27 adds interface controls, automation tools, camera-assisted actions, media features, and parental controls. A new Liquid Glass slider in Settings > Appearance > Liquid Glass lets users choose how transparent or opaque buttons, toolbars, menus, and app chrome appear. Apple also says it adjusted contrast, readability, and refraction behavior after complaints about the earlier Liquid Glass design.
Photos gains an upgraded Clean Up object-removal tool, Extend for generating image content beyond a photo’s existing edges, and Spatial Reframing for changing perspective after capture and filling resulting gaps with generated pixels. Apple says small Clean Up jobs can run on-device, while larger removals may be sent to Private Cloud Compute. The company says it attempts to preserve faces and pets during reframing.
These editing features are free at launch, but Apple places daily usage limits on the server-backed tools, and higher iCloud subscription tiers affect how regularly users can use them. Apple says SynthID support for most generated or edited images—depending on the edits—will arrive in a software update later in 2026.
Safari gets tab grouping by topic, webpage-change notifications, and natural-language custom extensions. A user can describe a desired extension rather than assemble its functionality manually; Safari first suggests relevant third-party extensions, then can generate a custom one. Generated extensions can carry across a user’s Apple devices. Shortcuts follows the same direction: a user can describe an automation in ordinary language, have the system construct it, then refine or manually edit the result.
The release also adds Call Context, which surfaces items such as flight confirmation codes or reservation numbers while a user calls a business. Some proposed one-tap suggestions in Messages and Mail—for example, making a calendar event from an incoming message—were removed from the final iOS 27 build and are slated for a future update. Apple has not supplied a date for their return.
Other changes include additions to Weather, Messages, and iCloud Shared Albums. The Weather app adds detailed conditions, precipitation, and wind tabs plus a written Highlights summary. Messages now lets users choose whether the control by the text field is a Record Audio button, Start Dictation button, or no button, addressing accidental dictation activation. iCloud Shared Albums gain full-resolution sharing and easier participation from Android and Windows through iCloud.com.
AirPods 4, AirPods 5, AirPods Pro 2, AirPods Pro 3, and AirPods Max 2 gain a three-band custom EQ for lows, mids, and highs. HomeKit Secure Video cameras can now stream and record in 2K or 4K, while AI-generated descriptions and natural-language video search require iCloud+ storage: a 2TB plan for one camera and a higher tier for additional cameras.
Security fixes are also available on iOS 26.7
Apple’s iOS 27 security bulletin covers more than 100 vulnerabilities, including multiple kernel issues. One could let a malicious application gain root privileges, while another could permit remote code execution over Bluetooth. The company’s iOS 27 security notes say none of the listed issues were known to have been actively exploited when published.
Apple also issued iOS 26.7 for users who are not ready to move to iOS 27. It fixes more than 80 vulnerabilities, with 75 fixes shared by the two releases. iOS 27 contains more total fixes.
| September 14 iPhone update | Security fixes | Overlap with the other release |
|---|---|---|
| iOS 27 | More than 100 | 75 shared fixes |
| iOS 26.7 | More than 80 | 75 shared fixes |
Three of the iOS 27 fixes credit Anthropic’s Claude, and Apple’s additional recognition section mentions OpenAI Codex Security. Automated and model-assisted vulnerability discovery is putting pressure on vendors to shorten discovery-to-patch cycles. We previously documented Google’s claim that automated tooling found and fixed 1,072 Chrome security bugs in 60 days, while Microsoft paid $20 million to 562 researchers amid higher vulnerability reporting and faster exploitation. Apple’s disclosures do not prove that these models independently found every credited flaw, but the tools now appear in a major mobile platform’s security credits.
Hardware support and region limits define the real rollout
The platform releases cover more than iPhone. iPadOS 27 supports the ninth-generation iPad and later; iPad mini 6 and later; 11-inch iPad Air fourth generation and later; 13-inch iPad Air models with M2 and later; 11-inch iPad Pro second generation and later; 12.9-inch iPad Pro fourth generation and later; and M4 iPad Pro models. The 2020 eighth-generation iPad and fifth-generation iPad mini do not receive iPadOS 27.
On the supported Apple Intelligence tier, Apple lists iPad mini with A17 Pro, iPads with M1 or later, Macs with M1 or later, MacBook Neo with A18 Pro, Apple Vision Pro, Apple Watch Series 9 or later, Apple Watch Ultra 2 or later, and Apple Watch SE 3 when paired with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone. Some Watch capabilities still require the iPhone to be nearby.
macOS Golden Gate adds Siri AI and prompt-based Shortcuts creation, while visionOS 27 lets Vision Pro owners turn panoramas into depth-enhanced spatial scenes and use them as personal environments. watchOS 27 adds Workout Buddy, including Spanish support alongside English. tvOS 27 gets high-resolution lossless Apple Music audio, a redesigned Apple Podcasts app, and broader text-size accessibility settings, but not Siri AI.
One iPhone feature is more limited than Apple Intelligence: iPhone Handoff, which lets one phone number operate across two iPhones, is currently available only to T-Mobile customers and costs an additional $5 per month, according to the supplied reporting. Apple has not established broader carrier availability.
The release includes maintenance work, including the older-branch security update and interface controls that reduce Liquid Glass opacity. Its central feature is a beta assistant that can index personal data, act across apps, and use cloud models subject to unspecified limits. The iOS 27 install is free; the eventual cost and practical ceiling of its headline feature are not.
