Apple unveils $1,999 iPhone Duo foldable for October

Apple has announced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, with a $1,999 starting price. Preorders begin October 16, 2026, and retail availability follows on October 23. Apple CEO John Ternus unveiled the phone on September 9 after the company’s traditional “One more thing” introduction.

The announcement matches the price previously attached to Apple’s rumored foldable iPhone Ultra. Our earlier reporting put that device near $1,999, while separate coverage warned that DRAM supply problems could constrain production of the foldable and the iPhone 18 Pro. The announcement confirms the price and launch timing, but the supplied reporting does not say how many units Apple plans to produce or whether the October 23 date applies to every market.

Two displays, one hinge

The iPhone Duo uses a compact 5.4-inch external display when folded and a 7.6-inch internal display when opened. The outer screen occupies 90% of the display area of an iPhone 18 Pro, according to the announcement, though Apple did not provide the 18 Pro’s corresponding measurement in the supplied material. Both panels use Super Retina XDR technology, support ProMotion refresh rates and Always-On display functionality, and reach a claimed peak brightness of 3,000 nits.

The internal panel has a nanostructured coating intended to reduce reflections and make the crease less visible. Apple says support for the USB-C Apple Pencil will arrive later in 2026, so stylus support may not be available on the first day of sales.

The chassis uses polished Grade 5 titanium. Its concealed hinge contains more than 100 parts, and the phone is protected by Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says is three times more scratch-resistant than its predecessor. The device also carries an IP68 rating and moves Touch ID into the side lock button.

That creates a different biometric setup from the Face ID system associated with recent iPhones, but the announcement does not explain whether Touch ID replaces Face ID entirely or whether both systems are present. It also does not specify the phone’s folded thickness, weight, hinge durability rating, or repair cost—measurements that will matter for a first-generation foldable.

Cameras built around the foldable form factor

The rear camera system contains two 48-megapixel Fusion modules. The main camera offers zero shutter lag and optical-quality 2x zoom, while the ultrawide camera supports macro photography. Apple is using the two-screen design for features that would be difficult or less convenient on a conventional phone. Video recording reaches 4K at 120 frames per second with Dolby Vision, a specification aimed at slow-motion capture. The report does not include storage limits for that mode or say whether the feature works with both cameras.

A20 Pro and foldable-focused iOS 27 changes

The iPhone Duo runs on Apple’s 2-nanometer A20 Pro processor and uses a custom vapor chamber for heat dissipation. Apple claims a 20% CPU performance increase and says a new 16-core Neural Engine doubles the speed of local AI workloads. Those figures lack a stated baseline, test conditions, workload, or comparison chip, so they cannot yet be treated as independent performance results.

The thermal hardware matters because a foldable chassis has less room for sustained cooling than a conventional slab phone, while the Duo’s two displays and high-refresh operation can add to power and heat demands. The announcement does not provide sustained-performance figures, charging behavior under load, or the vapor chamber’s size.

iOS 27 has been adapted for the larger open display. The major change is Split View, which allows two apps to run simultaneously on a divided screen—an iPhone capability Apple has not previously offered in this form. An updated Siri is also described as understanding personal context and analyzing information directly from the screen.

The announcement ties those functions to Apple Intelligence, but it does not identify which models or languages support each capability, whether processing happens locally or through Apple’s servers, or whether any features are restricted by region. Those omissions affect US buyers because Apple’s feature availability has varied by language and market.

Price, storage and launch schedule

Apple will sell the iPhone Duo in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB configurations. Only the entry price—$1,999—is specified in the supplied announcement; prices for the larger storage tiers have not been announced.

The phone comes in Star White and Night Sky. It uses eSIM only, with no physical SIM slot, and supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. The October 23 US availability implied by the announcement also needs to be reconciled with reported memory-supply pressure that could limit launch inventory.
