Apple unveils $1,999 iPhone Duo foldable for October

Apple has announced the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, with a $1,999 starting price. Preorders begin October 16, 2026, and retail availability follows on October 23. Apple CEO John Ternus unveiled the phone on September 9 after the company’s traditional “One more thing” introduction.

The announcement matches the price previously attached to Apple’s rumored foldable iPhone Ultra. Two displays, one hinge

The iPhone Duo uses a compact 5.4-inch external display when folded and a 7.6-inch internal display when opened. The outer screen occupies 90% of the display area of an iPhone 18 Pro, according to the announcement, though Apple did not provide the 18 Pro’s corresponding measurement in the supplied material. Both panels use Super Retina XDR technology, support ProMotion refresh rates and Always-On display functionality, and reach a claimed peak brightness of 3,000 nits.

The internal panel has a nanostructured coating intended to reduce reflections and make the crease less visible. Apple says support for the USB-C Apple Pencil will arrive later in 2026, so stylus support may not be available on the first day of sales.

The chassis uses polished Grade 5 titanium. Its concealed hinge contains more than 100 parts, and the phone is protected by Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple says is three times more scratch-resistant than its predecessor. The device also carries an IP68 rating and moves Touch ID into the side lock button.

That creates a different biometric setup from the Face ID system associated with recent iPhones, but the announcement does not explain whether Touch ID replaces Face ID entirely or whether both systems are present. It also does not specify the phone’s folded thickness, weight, hinge durability rating, or repair cost—measurements that will matter for a first-generation foldable.

Cameras built around the foldable form factor

The rear camera system contains two 48-megapixel Fusion modules. The main camera offers zero shutter lag and optical-quality 2x zoom, while the ultrawide camera supports macro photography. Apple is using the two-screen design for features that would be difficult or less convenient on a conventional phone. A20 Pro and foldable-focused iOS 27 changes

The iPhone Duo runs on Apple’s 2-nanometer A20 Pro processor and uses a custom vapor chamber for heat dissipation. Apple claims a 20% CPU performance increase and says a new 16-core Neural Engine doubles the speed of local AI workloads. Those figures lack a stated baseline, test conditions, workload, or comparison chip, so they cannot yet be treated as independent performance results.

The thermal hardware matters because a foldable chassis has less room for sustained cooling than a conventional slab phone, while the Duo’s two displays and high-refresh operation can add to power and heat demands. The announcement does not provide sustained-performance figures, charging behavior under load, or the vapor chamber’s size.

iOS 27 has been adapted for the larger open display. The major change is Split View, which allows two apps to run simultaneously on a divided screen—an iPhone capability Apple has not previously offered in this form. An updated Siri is also described as understanding personal context and analyzing information directly from the screen.

The announcement ties those functions to Apple Intelligence, but it does not identify which models or languages support each capability, whether processing happens locally or through Apple’s servers, or whether any features are restricted by region. Those omissions affect US buyers because Apple’s feature availability has varied by language and market.

Price, storage and launch schedule

Apple will sell the iPhone Duo in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB configurations. Only the entry price—$1,999—is specified in the supplied announcement; prices for the larger storage tiers have not been announced.

The phone comes in Star White and Night Sky. It uses eSIM only, with no physical SIM slot, and supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. The first-generation hardware leaves several practical questions unresolved: the cost of higher storage tiers, the phone’s thickness and weight, hinge replacement, display repair, sustained A20 Pro performance, and regional availability. The October 23 US availability implied by the announcement also needs to be reconciled with reported memory-supply pressure that could limit launch inventory.

Update, 10 September 2026 — No Face ID, with Apple Watch unlocking

MacRumors reports that the iPhone Duo lacks Face ID. Touch ID is integrated into the side button and works whether the phone is open or closed, resolving the earlier uncertainty over whether the two systems would coexist.

The phone can also be configured to unlock through an Apple Watch, without pressing the side button. MacRumors adds that preorders begin at 5:00 a.m. Pacific on October 16, rather than only specifying the October 16 date reported in the announcement.

Update, 10 September 2026 — Australia pricing and preorder time confirmed

For Australian buyers, TechRadar reports that iPhone Duo preorders open Friday, October 16, at 10 p.m. AEST. The 256GB model starts at AU$3,499, while the 2TB configuration reaches AU$5,899; those figures add regional pricing to the US starting price already reported here. TechRadar also lists Afterpay financing from AU$145.79 per month over 24 months and trade-in rebates of up to AU$1,595 in Australia.

The report identifies another hardware omission: the Duo has no telephoto camera. Its camera setup therefore consists of the two 48-megapixel Fusion modules described in the announcement, without a dedicated telephoto lens.

Update, 10 September 2026 — Hands-on images show a visible display crease

TechRadar reports that early hands-on images show a vertical crease on the iPhone Duo’s 7.6-inch inner display. The dip is visible when the phone is held at certain angles and under different lighting, rather than disappearing entirely.

The report says the display’s nano-texture layer significantly reduces the crease’s visibility and glare. Its accompanying first-look images make the crease difficult to identify when the phone is viewed face-on, but it remains apparent in less direct viewing conditions.

Update, 29 September 2026 — Pre-order setup opens October 12

MacRumors reports that iPhone Duo buyers will be able to use Apple’s “Get Ready” process beginning Monday, October 12. The detail was added to the product page on September 28, according to a Reddit post cited by the outlet.

The flow lets buyers choose a color and storage capacity, verify carrier status, select accessories and AppleCare+, enter trade-in details, add a payment method, and provide shipping and billing addresses. Apple says the saved configuration can then be submitted with one tap when orders open.

Update, 1 October 2026 — Replaceable inner cover layer costs $19 with AppleCare+

MacRumors reports that Apple’s vice president of hardware engineering, Kate Bergeron, said the nano-texture cover layer over the iPhone Duo’s inner display can be removed and replaced. The layer is intended to help conceal the foldable display’s crease, and Bergeron said replacement is an option if it wears down or the crease becomes more visible over time.

Apple’s website lists a $19 charge in the US for cover-layer replacement for iPhone Duo owners with AppleCare+. Apple has not disclosed the price without coverage. MacRumors says the service will likely be limited to Apple Stores and Apple Authorized Service Providers; it remains unclear whether customers will be able to remove the layer themselves.

Update, 9 October 2026 — Launch expands to 28 markets on October 30

MacRumors reports that Apple said iPhone Duo will launch in 28 additional countries and regions on October 30. The report does not identify those markets.

Apple also said the phone will ship with iOS 27.1. MacRumors expects iOS 27.2 to reach the public at some point in October, but says Apple has not provided a release date for that update.

Update, 9 October 2026 — AT&T offers up to $1,200 off with trade-in

Tom’s Guide reports that AT&T will offer new and existing customers up to $1,200 off an iPhone Duo with an eligible trade-in when preorders open October 16. The carrier has not detailed the qualifying devices, plan requirements, or how the credit is applied in the report.

Customers switching to AT&T can receive up to $800 toward the remaining balance on their current device, according to the report. AT&T is also advertising $200 in savings per line for online orders. These are carrier offers rather than a reduction in Apple’s $1,999 starting price.

Update, 11 October 2026 — Retail showcase planned amid limited launch stock

MacRumors reports, citing Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, that Apple is preparing dedicated iPhone Duo displays and additional demo hardware for the October 23 release while expecting retail stock to remain limited. Gurman said Apple had believed production constraints might push sales into late November about two months ago, but has since built enough inventory to keep the October launch date.

Apple’s Fifth Avenue store is expected to receive more than 150 demo units, while the Apple Park Visitor Center could get nearly 100. Non-flagship stores are expected to average about 20 units, and three prominent locations—Michigan Avenue in Chicago, The Grove in Los Angeles and Manhattan’s Upper West Side—are slated for roughly 30 to 40 each. TechRadar reports that Verizon will offer an iPhone Duo and unlimited data plan bundle for $72. T-Mobile is set to offer up to $1,000 off with a trade-in and a new plan. The outlet also says Apple’s direct trade-in estimator currently caps rebates at $885 in the US and £855 in the UK, with the maximum requiring a recent device in good condition.

For in-store US purchases, TechRadar cites a Mark Gurman post saying Apple retail stores will be able to set a buyer’s name into the device’s first-boot greeting. The option is limited to iPhone Duo, English and Spanish, and US stores, according to the post.

Update, 16 October 2026 — Orders slip to early 2027 as stock runs out

MacRumors reports that iPhone Duo preorders opened at 5 a.m. Pacific on October 16 and delivery estimates moved from October 23 to November within minutes. By 5:30 a.m., Apple’s estimates had reached January 25, and the company is no longer taking orders for delivery during 2026; new buyers are quoted early-2027 delivery.

Apple told the Financial Times that demand has been “nothing short of extraordinary” and that it is working to get the phone to customers as quickly as possible. Apple’s site says customers should check back October 24 for store-pickup availability, but the company has not said whether walk-in stock will be available on October 23. MacRumors also lists the 2TB model at $3,199.

Update, 16 October 2026 — Launch-day pickup inventory sells out

CNBC reports that iPhone Duo inventory for launch-day pickup has sold out, while some online delivery estimates have already moved into late January. Apple said preorder demand was “nothing short of extraordinary” and that it would continue accepting online orders.

Counterpoint Research director Tarun Pathak told CNBC that initial demand is expected to exceed supply. The firm expects roughly 6 million or fewer units to be available in the near term, according to the report.

Update, 17 October 2026 — Staff warn against launch-day walk-ins

MacRumors reports that some Apple retail employees have been told to discourage customers from visiting on October 23 to buy an iPhone Duo without a preorder. Store staff told the outlet that they expect little or no stock for walk-in purchases and have been instructed to warn customers they will likely be disappointed.

Apple has not publicly said whether stores will have launch-day walk-in inventory. Engadget reports that Best Buy’s website was showing November shipping estimates for iPhone Duo orders at the time of publication. Apple has not confirmed whether its physical stores or authorized retailers will carry launch-period inventory, but the Best Buy listing indicates that at least one third-party seller was accepting orders with a delivery window earlier than the January estimates shown to some late Apple Store buyers.

Engadget also says online customers have reported a mix of October 23 Apple Store pickup dates and November or December delivery estimates. Those customer reports do not establish how much inventory is available at each location or configuration.
