iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max raise the camera stakes

Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max at Apple Event 2026. They are the high-end alternative to the $1,999 iPhone Duo foldable for buyers who want a conventional phone. The main changes are a variable-aperture camera, Apple’s first 2nm phone chip, a larger vapor chamber and substantially longer rated battery life.

Both Pro models are heavier than their predecessors, and the launch-price figures in the hands-on coverage do not agree. One account lists the iPhone 18 Pro at $1,099 and the Pro Max at $1,199; another lists them at $1,199 and $1,299, respectively. The sources agree that Apple raised both models by $100, but the exact starting prices need confirmation.

Variable aperture is the major camera change

The iPhone 18 Pro’s 48-megapixel Fusion main camera adds six laser-cut blades that adjust the aperture while shooting. Apple provides four manual aperture settings, including f/1.48 for a shallower depth of field and f/4.0 when the photographer wants more of the scene in focus. The system can also change the aperture automatically based on lighting and the desired image effect.

The difference should be most visible in portraits and scenes where depth of field matters. A brief simulated-bar test described a visible change when photographing a glass at two aperture settings, but it was not a full camera evaluation. Separate hands-on material also says low-light and night photography were not tested, so image-quality claims beyond the aperture mechanism remain unverified here.

The camera app adds a Lens Aperture control for choosing among the four f-stops. Apple is also adding a Textures option to Photographic Styles, with controls intended to smooth skin or add grain for a more film-like appearance. Those are processing controls rather than a change to the optical system, but they give photographers another way to alter the output without a separate app.

The physical camera layout is not the only visible change. The Dynamic Island is described as almost half as small as before, leaving more screen area while retaining support for three simultaneous Live Activities. The new colors include Burgundy, Glacier light blue, silver and true black; Burgundy replaces Cosmic Orange. The rear matte-glass camera panel is now color-matched to the phone’s metal.

A20 Pro targets sustained performance

The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max use the A20 Pro, a 2nm chip with a six-core CPU and seven-core GPU. Apple says two of the CPU cores are up to 20% faster than the A19 Pro, while graphics performance is up to 40% faster than the iPhone 17 Pro Max. A hands-on session running the upcoming Monster Hunter game reportedly reached up to 120 frames per second, but that is an observed demonstration rather than an independent benchmark.

The cooling system is as important as the chip specification. Apple has moved to a larger, second-generation vapor chamber that is rated for up to 40% better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro. The memory sits beside the A20 Pro rather than in a stacked configuration, a layout intended to help move heat away from the processor. Another hands-on account found the interface responsive but did not run a workload such as ray-traced 3D gaming long enough to heat-test the phones.

The 40% figure is Apple’s claim, and the available demonstrations do not establish how long the phones can sustain peak performance under a repeatable workload. The larger vapor chamber may reduce throttling, but it also contributes to the phones' increased weight.

Battery life rises, along with weight

Apple rates the iPhone 18 Pro Max for 45 hours of video playback and the iPhone 18 Pro for 36 hours. The comparable iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro figures were 39 hours and 33 hours, respectively. Another account describes the gains as six hours for the Pro Max and three hours for the Pro, but those are local-video-playback figures and should not be treated as a universal battery-life increase across apps, cellular use or gaming.

Charging is also faster. A 60-watt charger can reach 50% in 15 minutes, while 35-watt MagSafe charging reaches 50% in 30 minutes. The sources do not specify the battery capacities, so the longer endurance cannot be separated into gains from battery size, chip efficiency, display behavior or other system changes.

The phones retain the same screen sizes: 6.3 inches for the iPhone 18 Pro and 6.9 inches for the Pro Max. Both continue to support bright displays with ProMotion refresh rates up to 120Hz. Their increased mass is measurable: the Pro is 5 grams heavier than the iPhone 17 Pro, while the Pro Max is 16 grams heavier than the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

The casing remains aluminum rather than titanium. One hands-on assessment also described aluminum as softer and more prone to visible bruising, although the available material does not provide durability testing. Buyers get more cooling and battery capacity, but carry more phone to get it.

Siri gains context, but not live conversation

The iPhone 18 Pro ships with iOS 27 and a more capable Siri experience. Visual Intelligence can identify dates on a poster and add them to the calendar, while personal-context features can surface information such as an upcoming flight and show it on screen for follow-up questions.

The sources say Siri cannot hold a live conversation about what the camera is seeing in the way Gemini Live or ChatGPT Voice can. It can recognize information and act on it, but the reported implementation is not yet a continuous, real-time visual dialogue.

Pricing is still the unresolved launch detail

The Pro models are aimed at people who want Apple’s strongest traditional phone rather than the foldable iPhone Duo. Previous coverage put that foldable at $1,999, with a 7.6-inch internal display, a 5.4-inch external display and an October 16 preorder date. The Pro phones offer a telephoto camera, Face ID and a familiar slab design at a lower entry price, but their own pricing has conflicting figures in the available reporting.

The price discrepancy changes the starting price of the Pro Max by $100 and determines how much distance remains between it and the foldable Duo. Until Apple’s final store listings settle the conflict, the safe conclusion is that both iPhone 18 Pro models cost $100 more than their predecessors.

For buyers choosing between the two Pro models, the Max has a 45-hour video rating and larger display. The smaller Pro retains the same camera and A20 Pro platform in a less expensive, lighter package, though “lighter” here still means 211 grams. Neither model addresses Siri’s lack of live visual conversation, and neither the camera quality improvements nor the thermal claims have yet been backed by independent, repeatable testing.
