IFA 2026: Dell’s 14S laptop pairs a sharp display with fixed RAM

Dell announced and showed the 14S, a 14-inch mainstream laptop aimed at students, at IFA 2026 on September 2. It combines a choice of Intel processors, a high-resolution 120Hz display option and four colorful finishes—but Dell has soldered the memory to the motherboard, so buyers can’t upgrade it later.

The 14S sits below Dell’s recently launched XPS 13 and is intended to provide a more affordable option as laptop prices continue to rise. Dell hasn’t announced a final US price or exact release date. Company representatives said during a virtual briefing that the 14S should be close to the XPS 13's $700 starting price, but slightly cheaper; availability is expected later in fall 2026.

A 120Hz panel on an otherwise basic laptop

The standard screen is a non-touch 14-inch LCD with a 1920×1200 resolution, 60Hz refresh rate and 300 nits of brightness. The upgrade is a 2880×1800 panel running at 120Hz, reaching 450 nits and covering 100 percent of the sRGB color space.

The upgraded display sets the 14S apart from the base configuration for photo work, video playback and general desktop use. The supplied specifications don’t establish whether the higher-resolution screen affects battery life.

The display options are non-touch. That distinguishes the 14S from some convertible student laptops, while the machine includes two USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 ports with DisplayPort and Power Delivery, an HDMI 1.4 port and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The latter differs from the XPS 13, which lacks a headphone jack.

The 14S weighs 2.54 pounds and carries a 61.2Wh battery. Dell claims up to 23 hours of Netflix streaming, while the available reporting does not include an independent battery test or specify the conditions behind that figure. The higher-resolution 120Hz screen could also produce a different result from the base panel, but Dell has not supplied separate endurance figures.

The memory is the compromise

Dell offers the 14S with either 8GB or 16GB of LPDDR5x RAM, alongside 256GB, 512GB or 1TB of PCIe NVMe SSD storage. The memory is onboard rather than socketed, locking the system to the capacity selected at checkout.

That makes the 8GB entry configuration difficult to recommend for a laptop intended to last through several years of schoolwork. The 16GB model is the safer choice, but its price has not been disclosed. Dell’s configuration list also leaves open whether every display, processor, memory and storage combination will be available in the US.

Processing options are limited to Intel’s Core 5 320 and Core 7 350 from the Series 3 family. The 14S won’t use Intel Panther Lake processors, unlike the XPS 13 configuration Dell is expected to offer later. That positions the product as a conventional lower-cost laptop rather than a smaller version of Dell’s newest premium platform.

The four finishes are Linen, Dusty Rose, Washed Denim and Velvet Green. Dell also includes a 1080p webcam with Windows Hello face-unlock support.

Pricing and availability are still unresolved

The 14S is a student-oriented laptop with more visual variety than the XPS 13 and a display option that goes beyond basic 1080p-class panels. Its hardware trade-off is fixed RAM: buyers must decide at purchase whether 8GB or 16GB will be enough for the entire useful life of the machine. The higher-resolution screen may also raise the still-unknown price.

Dell says the laptop will arrive later in fall 2026, with pricing to be announced closer to release. Until Dell publishes US configurations and prices, the $700 XPS 13 starting price is the only concrete reference point—not the 14S’s final cost.
