Anthropic may seek another $36 billion for Google TPUs

Blackstone is in preliminary talks to arrange a second $36 billion debt package to fund Anthropic’s use of Google’s tensor processing units (TPUs), according to Bloomberg, as reported by ITzine citing ixbt. The discussions are still at an early stage, and the terms could change.

The proposed financing would follow an agreement worth about $35 billion, reportedly arranged around two months ago. That deal funded Anthropic’s rental of Google computing infrastructure across five data centers.

According to the Financial Times, the earlier arrangement used a special-purpose company that purchased roughly 1 gigawatt of TPU-based computing equipment and then leased it to Anthropic on a long-term basis. The structure treats expensive AI infrastructure as a separate financing asset, allowing Anthropic to use the equipment without buying it outright at once.

Blackstone, Anthropic, Google, and Apollo declined to comment on Bloomberg’s report. The new proposal is therefore not a completed transaction or confirmation of a new chip order; its size and terms remain unsettled.

Update, 1 September 2026 — Anthropic reportedly signs $35 billion Lambda deal

Tom’s Guide reports, citing Reuters, that Anthropic has signed a $35 billion cloud-computing agreement with Nvidia-backed Lambda. The deal covers roughly 350 megawatts at a new data center being developed by Hut 8 in Nueces County, Texas, with Nvidia GPUs supplying the computing capacity.

The report says the Texas agreement comes alongside a separate, recently reported $45 billion commitment to Nscale over six years, bringing those two deals to about $80 billion. The Wall Street Journal reported that Nvidia itself will hold the lease on the Texas data center. The Lambda agreement remains reported rather than confirmed by Anthropic in the source.
