Sony has not set a launch date for the PlayStation 6, despite growing expectations that the next console could arrive in 2027. CEO Hiroki Totoki confirmed the timing remains undecided, according to Digital Trends, citing reporting from The Wall Street Journal.
A 2027 release is still possible, but it is an analyst expectation rather than a date Sony has announced. The uncertainty comes as artificial intelligence demand contributes to shortages of key components and pushes memory costs higher across the gaming and entertainment industries.
Sony’s business no longer depends only on consoles
The missing date also reflects a broader change in Sony’s business. Under Totoki, the company has increasingly focused on intellectual property and entertainment, with movies, music, and games accounting for most of its revenue.
PlayStation franchises can now generate value through films and television as well as games. Properties such as The Last of Us and God of War support an entertainment strategy in which successful game IP continues producing revenue without requiring a new console launch.
AI creates a complication for the PS6 as both a cost pressure and an internal tool. Sony is already using AI in creative work, including automating character-hair animation in games, while the industry-wide demand for AI hardware makes console components more expensive and harder to secure.
That gives Sony less reason to force the PS6 onto the market before its hardware economics are favorable. The company can continue building its games, movies, music, and anime businesses while waiting for conditions to improve.
The current PlayStation generation also has another major commercial moment ahead: the sixth Grand Theft Auto game, which Digital Trends reports is expected in November. The report does not specify the year. That release gives Sony a significant software event before the PS6 eventually arrives.
Sony still needs a compelling next-generation PlayStation, but the next console is no longer the sole engine of the company’s growth. For now, the only confirmed detail is that the PS6 calendar remains blank.
