Samsung unveils 200MP sensor with HDR zoom

Samsung’s 200MP ISOCELL HPC sensor adds multi-level HDR, 8K video and a claimed 60% Full Well Capacity increase.

Samsung has unveiled the ISOCELL HPC, a 200-megapixel smartphone image sensor designed to improve low-light photography, HDR and image quality across multiple zoom levels. The company has not said which phone will use it first.

DeepPix architecture and HDR

The sensor introduces Samsung’s DeepPix pixel architecture, which uses Front Deep Trench Isolation to increase the photodiode and shared floating diffusion capacity. Samsung says this raises Full Well Capacity by 60% compared with the previous generation.

The intended result is more light captured per frame, reduced noise, brighter highlights and deeper shadows. Those claims are tied to the sensor’s hardware design, but the company has not provided independent image comparisons or benchmark methodology.

ISOCELL HPC supports single-frame 16-bit HDR. Samsung says that produces up to four times richer color reproduction than conventional HDR. It also adds HDR processing at several zoom levels inside the sensor itself: 1x, 1.5x, 2x, 3x and 4x.

That in-sensor scaling is meant to preserve image quality and dynamic range as the camera changes magnification, rather than treating HDR as a feature available only at the main camera’s native view.

Samsung has also included Tetra²pixel, Super QPD autofocus, Smart-ISO Pro HDR, High Precision Microlens and High Transmittance ARL. The last two technologies are intended to direct more light toward each photodiode and reduce reflections, improving sharpness and color accuracy under different lighting conditions.

ITzine, citing Gizmochina, reported that several flagship phones are expected to be announced in China in September. It is not known whether the ISOCELL HPC will appear in the Oppo Find X10 series or Vivo X500 lineup.

The sensor’s specifications make it a substantial upgrade on paper, particularly the 60% Full Well Capacity increase and multi-level HDR support. But without a confirmed phone, launch date or independent testing, buyers in the US and Europe have no established path to get it. For now, ISOCELL HPC is a promising camera component—not yet a demonstrated improvement in a shipping smartphone.
