iOS 27 adds Call Context and Dual Capture
iOS 27 adds on-device Call Context, dual-camera FaceTime on iPhone 17 models, better network switching, and expanded safety tools.
Apple’s iOS 27 adds two notable capabilities to its communication apps: Call Context in Phone and Dual Capture in FaceTime. The update also improves weak-connection performance, network switching, Live Captions, and Communication Safety.
Call Context in the Phone app
Call Context uses Apple Intelligence to surface relevant information from the Mail app when you call a business. For example, calling an airline may bring up a flight confirmation code, while calling a hotel may display a reservation code.
The feature does not listen to the conversation. Instead, it matches the number being called with related details in Mail. Processing runs entirely on-device, and Call Context requires an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. It also works when placing calls from an iPad or Mac.
Dual Capture and other FaceTime updates
On iPhone 17 models and iPhone Air, FaceTime’s Dual Capture can use the front and rear cameras simultaneously. The person on the other end can see both your face and the view from the back camera. Users can enable the feature with the camera-flip button, or disable the front-camera feed if they want to show only the rear-camera view.
Video streaming with Dual Capture is limited to the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air, and newer models. However, any device running iOS 27 can receive a dual-video FaceTime stream because the receiving device has no hardware requirement.
Other changes include:
- Connection Quality: FaceTime calls should maintain better quality on poor connections.
- Wi-Fi and cellular switching: iPhones transition more reliably between Wi-Fi and cellular networks, reducing dropped connections while moving between them.
- Live Captions: Traditional Chinese is now supported.
- Communication Safety: FaceTime and Messages can block gore and violence, expanding protection beyond nudity.
iOS 27 release timing
As of July 28, 2026, iOS 27 is being beta-tested and is available to developers and public beta testers. Apple plans to release it this fall alongside new iPhone models. The source does not provide a more specific public release date.
