Comcast turns Xfinity routers into motion detectors
Comcast’s Xfinity Shield turns compatible routers into opt-in motion detectors at no extra cost, with a $15-per-month camera tier.
Comcast is turning compatible Xfinity routers into motion detectors. Its new Xfinity Shield platform uses Wi-Fi signal changes to monitor activity at home, without adding cameras or dedicated motion sensors.
As reported by Engadget, Wi-Fi Shield is available to Xfinity Internet customers at no extra cost. The opt-in Wi-Fi Motion feature detects disruptions in the radio-frequency signal between an Xfinity Gateway and connected devices. When it detects unexpected movement, it can send an alert through the Xfinity app.
The Verge reports that the feature became available through an Xfinity Internet app update on August 18, 2026. It requires an XB7 or newer advanced gateway and can be enabled or disabled in the app. Comcast says a typical Xfinity customer has 36 Wi-Fi-connected devices, giving the system plenty of potential signal paths to analyze.
Comcast says Wi-Fi Motion does not record video, capture images, or identify individuals. The system can be configured through three activity modes:
- Home Watch for when people are active at home
- Away Watch for when the household is out
- Dark Watch for nighttime or sleep hours
Xfinity Shield also combines device security and parental controls in the same app. Its cybersecurity tools are designed to protect connected devices from malware, phishing, and other online threats, while Family Settings lets households create profiles, assign devices, and manage screen time and device limits.
Kohposh Kuda, Xfinity’s senior vice president of consumer products, said Comcast has spent three years refining the underlying algorithms.
“We have spent the last three years advancing the algorithms for WiFi Motion and tightening up some of the irregularities that came with the early versions of Wi-Fi sensing. We’re at a point where we feel confident in the WiFi Motion capability that customers can use this for motion detection in their home and for a basic level of security.”

The technology is not new. The Verge notes that Linksys launched a similar service in 2021 before discontinuing it a few years later. Wiz introduced Wi-Fi-sensing smart bulbs in 2023, while Philips Hue has since used similar radio-frequency sensing through Zigbee.
Comcast does not position Wi-Fi Motion as a replacement for conventional security systems. Its paid Xfinity Shield Select tier costs $15 per month and adds an indoor camera, a door or window sensor, cloud video storage, and 24/7 urgent-response service. Its AI-powered camera alerts can identify people, pets, packages, and vehicles.
The no-hardware approach could also support uses such as aging in place, but Comcast has not detailed additional applications. The company says Wi-Fi Motion is the foundation for more advanced use cases it plans to develop, with more Xfinity Shield features and services expected in 2027.
